Hauppauge is a hamlet located in the towns of Islip and Smithtown in Suffolk County with a population of nearly 20,000. It has a total area of 10.8 square miles of which 10.7 square miles land and 0.15 square miles is water. It derives its name from the Native American word for "sweet waters", due to the local tribes getting their fresh drinking water from this area.
